Google Chrome – Better than Firefox? Sep 03

Hi there,

a friend just told the Google Chrome browser has finally been release.

First thing that surprised me during installation – it asked me to close Firefox, so it could import it’s settings! Hmm… do I really want that?! I was asking myself, this actually was the first time I felt for a moment as paranoid about Google as I have always felt when MS wanted me to let them do something I have no control over… well, curious as I am – I did what they asked me to do.

First page that shows was… boring, but after reading what this page is about, I thought it’s actually pretty cool. Whenever you open a new tab in Chrome, you get a list of the most visited website. I wonder how long it will take until (someone makes / I find) a Firefox Plugin that can do that.

It asked me if I want to keep Google as the default search engine,? Of course I want that! But, where do I use the default search engine?! I will let you know, if/when I find out. So far, I can’t find any search box, and I have to visit google.com to make a search.

Here is the “Why did they make a browser page”

Short version: we use browsers, we need browsers, we have ideas for improvements of existing browsers, so we make our own browser. It is open source; if the browser crashes it only crashes the tab, not the whole browser (pretty cool, I think); it protects from bad sites; they “built V8, a more powerful JavaScript engine, to power the next generation of web applications that aren’t even possible in today’s browsers.”; it will be available for Mac and Linux in the future; it uses (among other open source projects) components of Apple WebKit and Mozilla Firefox.

So, back to my question – Better than Firefox?
I think it will attract a different crowd of people. Firefox, with it’s many great Addons, is really something for “power Internet users”, while Google Chrome seems to me more something for the average Internet surfer. However, I for one will probably end up using both, as Google Chrome seems to be a bit faster (which may be the result of the billions of Addons I have installed in Firefox…)

YouTube: The Machine is Us_ing us Aug 02

Someone sent me this video a little while ago, and I just stumbled across it again.

After it was finished playing, these little images showed up underneath, probably all of you have seen them before. Today was actually the first time I have taken a closer look at them and found a video from the maker of the video above. It is a very interesting analyzes of YouTube and the YouTube culture, and I really enjoyed watching it. The video gave me an insight into YouTube, and it revealed things to me of which some I’ve seen before (on YouTube), but never realized the bigger picture behind them. Have a look (if you have the time), I think you’ll find it interesting.

If it says: “Video is no longer available”, clear your browser cache and then this page. If that doesn’t help, update your flash player by clicking here.

Skype is out – here comes oovoo and gizmo5 Mar 25

Hi there,

today my good friend John showed me something that kind of blew my mind…

First is oovoo, a skype-like video chat program, where you can have a video conference with up to 6 people at the same time, and you can call US landlines and mobile phones for FREE!

2nd in line is Gizmo5, which needs a bit more of an introduction, as it is probably the coolest chat and VoIP program out there… for now…

Apart from a quite nice looking PC client, it also offers a software for your mobile phone, with which you can chat with your friends using popular chat programs such as msn messenger, send and receive files like pictures or videos, and you can make VoIP phone calls via you mobile phone (which will save you A LOT of money, as Internet usage time is cheaper than calling time). To get the software for you mobile phone, all you need to do is provide your phone number and click a button, the software comes via SMS and is installed in a heartbeat.

But that’s not all, they offer calls via the mobile phones or PC software to landlines and mobile phone from over 60 countries for FREE, and of course video calls from PC to PC just like skype. There are some restrictions to this, but no purchase is necessary ever! Basically you get 20 minutes for free each week, and the people you want to call need to have an gizmo5 account in which the number you want to call is saved in “their” profile. I just simple created a couple of accounts (like for my mum who lives overseas, and who never uses the Internet) and then called her for free, hehe.

Now would come a bunch of blah blah, so I guess I save it and tell you to go check out both programs yourself.
