Hi there,
this turns out to be another interesting year for me. I have made quite a New Years Resolution this time, at least from my perspective, to tie up all loose ends and be a bit more of a regular working family guy, which includes getting up early and going to sleep at a reasonable time. Well… I have done quite some of that in January, like finally getting www.seoexperts.com up in the air. However, in February I started to realize, that work didn’t get done as quickly as it should, and by the beginning of this month I was totally behind on every time line existing, work and private. I find it a bit ironic, that this is happening now where I get up early in the morning. I even told a few people that, while trying to make everyone happy, I probably managed to piss everyone off… it actually depressed me a bit, to a point that I had a tense neck and headache for almost 2 weeks, up until a few days ago… A few days ago I had a bit of a revelation when talking to a client of mine about this. She pointed out, that in the daytime there are always distractions – especially where I programm at home, but also phone calls etc are a distraction when programming, and that is probably why things are now taking longer to program. I thought about how I used to be a night owl, and quite often programmed for 8 hours or more straight through the night and the longer I programmed the faster I got because I was more and more “into” the code…. I am not doing that any more, in fact I have hardly ever more than an hour without something interrupting me – and that is the reason! WHY didn’t I realize this earlier?! So, I am changing my whole plan now, hehe… I will get up a little later around 11am, do my coffee and news, have breakfast/lunch with the family and then do the “normal work” like emails, phone calls etc. until I “finish normal work” at 6pm. Then, after everyone went to bed, I make a night session of programming until about 2-3am.
So… let’s see how that works out. If you want to call me, do it between 11am and 6pm, and there is a good chance I answer
p.s. everyone who tried to call me in the daytime recently and didn’t get through is hereby informed, I either turned my phone off or silent, so I can get some work done… nothing personal.

I’ve also been struggling with the same issue and found out that night time is when I get most things done. Why that is, I’m not sure. Maybe it’s just the non-interrupted time or maybe something else, but also for me it takes some time to get “into the code”. Your solution sounds good and I think I will also try something similar. There are many smaller tasks that are ok for daytime (such as seo optimizing, answering emails, research, css tweaking..) so it makes sense to split the work day into two to be able to totally focus on the programming (or design) part.
